Put down the exfoliator - it may not be what you need.

With a change of season comes a change in how our skin feels to the touch.

Rougher, bumpy, or even cracked skin can lead to the temptation to over-exfoliate.

Certainly, gentle exfoliation can allow the skin to absorb moisturising products better to relieve the feeling of dryness.

However, the risk of overdoing it is high.

So here are some guidelines to follow:

  • If is uncomfortable, stop. Exfoliating is not meant to feel anything but comfortable. It could be that the product is too aggressive, or that the skin is compromised and cannot handle the action of exfoliating.

  • Plume Skin recommends DMS Peeling Cream (nicknamed Smoothing Cream) from Dermaviduals. Built to protect the skin barrier whilst gently lifting off the redundant cells on the surface. DMS-encapsulated jojoba beads have a mechanical action when massaged over the skin to give a gentle polish.

  • Don’t do it too often. Less is sometimes better. The peeling cream gives the flexibility of adding DMS Cleansing Milk to it the reduce the concentration of beads. Using this every second week is a recommendation often given. Keeping it regular but not too much.

  • If the skin is red, inflamed, or has active breakouts, hold off on exfoliating. There is already someone happening in the skin (trying to heal) and the stimulation from an exfoliating product is not needed right now.

Remember the top layer of skin, the bit you are trying to reduce, is part of our protection to the elements. We need to respect it if we expect it to do the job well.

We work on this idea with the in-clinic exfoliation treatment, our Enzyme Therapy Treatment is gentle but extremely effective.
